| Natural Kete Light golden brown is the natural, unaltered colour of flax, when woven and dried. When fresh - first taken from the flax plant - the leaves are vibrant green, and supple. At this stage, while still pliable, the flax is prepared, and the weaving created. Then, as the kete is left to dry naturally, the flax lightens in colour from fresh green to warm golden brown. Different flaxes, obtained from different flax plants, dry to varying shades of colour. So each woven creation is individual and unique. And subtle colour differences are often apparent even within one piece of weaving, created from only one type of flax. The weave pattern used in the kete displayed here is called, in Maori, Taki Rua - referring to a 'twill' style weave, created by flaxes passing over and then under two at a time. By varying the weaving method, the pattern appears to flow either vertically, or horizontally. Both patterns can be combined in one piece of weaving, changing over half way up the kete. Beautiful, natural, simple, uncluttered - these are the feelings natural woven flax inspire in me. I hope you'll enjoy them also. |
